Advancing Opportunity

A series of seminars which aim to address the need to create a society in which our public activities further the capacity of each and every citizen to realise their potential. The series will look at ways that the practical relationships between individuals, business, civic society and public institutions could deliver secure inclusive and dynamic economic growth, mutually assured liberty for all, and a sense of community shared by all.

Fair Tax

A review of whether it is possible to introduce a concept of “fairness” to the tax system. Should we expect tax policy to reflect a particular philosophy? What can we tax in the context of today’s global economy, with the changing balance between nations, capital and labour and the established and the new? How should we balance our system to meet the wishes and expectations of our people?

Social Housing and Life Chances

An exploration of how social housing affects the life chances of those in tenure. To what extent do social class groups differ in their access to different housing resources? How has this relationship changed over time in the UK? What is the relationship between personal and social risks to housing risk, and how this has changed over time? To what extent are housing resources a potential channel for effects of social class on childhood and adult outcomes?

Reinvigorating Communities

A series of lectures to reflect on how to reinvigorate our communities. How do we support a sense of ‘domestic community’ where the needs of families and women are taken into full account in the policy making process? Is the current level and nature of immigration positive or negative for the UK, socially, economically and culturally? Has our historic policy of multiculturalism led to a more integrated society or to more polarised communities?
