Schools sports participation in sharp decline

A new survey conducted by the Smith Institute of 1,000 school sport teachers and organisers reveals that participation in school sports has declined since the funding regime changed. The survey, which covers the period of the London Olympics, showed that since ring-fenced funding to support school sports was ended in 2011 there has been a sharp drop in participation.

Survey of housing associations show sector rethinking its purpose

A new report based on interviews with 50 chief executives and experts shows that housing associations are having to strike a new balance between their social values and commercial needs. The report looks at the tensions housing associations are facing, and examines whether the sector can continue to provide homes for low income households as before; developing new markets including in the PRS; and where next in an age of prolonged austerity?

Public services in the North approaching breaking point

A new Smith Institute report, Public Services North: Time for a New Deal?, warns that finances for public services in the North of England are being stretched to breaking point. The public sector is facing fundamental changes and the report poses major questions for public services providers in the North, with austerity and economic uncertainty set to continue, while the demand for services continues to rise. The report provides an in-depth analysis of how the cuts are impacting public services in the North harder than elsewhere, particularly local government services.
 
New report on health and well-being boards launched in parliament

A Smith Institute report suggests the new health and wellbeing boards could improve integrated care, provide a more democratic approach and help develop a shared plan for their local populations. However, building good relationships and adequate resources will be required if they are to be effective.

Groundbreaking report on the future of council housing

The Smith Institute acted as the secretariat (providing information and research) to the independent commission on the future of council housing in Southwark. The Commission looked at the future financing, ownership and operation of Southwark’s housing stock beyond 2015 over a 30 year period. The report sets out a challenging agenda for local authorities and their tenants across the country.
