The Smith Institute, founded in the memory of the late Rt Hon John Smith, is an independent think tank that undertakes research, education and events. Our charitable purpose is educational in regard to the UK economy in its widest sense. We provide a platform for national and international discussion on a wide range of public policy issues concerning social justice, community, governance, enterprise, economy, trade, and the environment.

what we do…

Our core work is to identify where the most relevant research is taking place and commission a range of academics, opinion formers and stakeholders to write. We then launch the publication at a high-level seminar attended by ministers, backbenchers, special advisers, civil servants, business and industrial leaders, and specialists. The aim is to stimulate a debate and facilitate stakeholder engagement in particular areas of public policy. We also undertake research projects with academic institutions, such as the University of Cambridge, and have a particular interest in the policy implications of studies we produce using the UK birth cohorts. The Institute holds roundtable discussions bringing together experts to discuss an issue in depth and publish a summary on the website. The Institute provides a platform for debate and discussion on a wide range of public policy issues at all three political party conferences. We attract a variety of distinguished speakers and commentators and find that not only do they facilitate debate but also enable us to gauge views from outside of Westminster and Whitehall. We have held a number of lectures over the years with a range of renowned domestic and international speakers.

supporting the Smith Institute…

The Smith Institute has worked with a range of organisations on a number of topics. This mutually beneficial relationship enables the issues raised to reach the widest possible audience. The organisations that we have worked with over the last couple of years include: Asthma UK; Barrow Cadbury Trust; Brookings Institute; CBI; Centre for Cities; Centre for Social Justice; Civitas; Core Cities; ESRC; Fabian Society; Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung; Great Ormond Street Hospital; Hansard Society; The King’s Fund; Institute for Fiscal Studies; NSPCC; Places for People; Policy Exchange; Reed Foundation; Remember A Charity; Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health; TCPA; Unison; and The Work Foundation.
