John Smith
The Smith Institute was founded in memory of the late John Smith QC MP, and its work is focussed on the interaction of fairness and enterprise - an area of political economy that was of particular interest to John.

John was first elected to Parliament in 1970 as MP for Monklands East (formerly Lanarkshire North). He served as Secretary of State for Trade in the Callaghan Government and subsequently as Opposition spokesperson on a number of economic and industrial issues. John was elected leader of the Labour party in 1992 until his untimely death in 1994.
