Britain for sale

August 12, 2015 By smithinstitute

Monday 23rd may 16:30, Central London

The event will see the launch of a collection of essays examining the costs and benefits of foreign ownership.

The launch will discuss whether the scale and type of foreign ownership in the UK matters? What are the positive and negative experiences of foreign ownership in the cities and regions? Are there longer term strategic, spatial and competition policy concerns? Does foreign ownership encourage cultural change with a greater focus on employees and local communities or re-enforce short-term profit maximization? What are the key regulatory and governance issues? What are the implications for localism and empowering citizens and communities? And, what should the policy response be?

Speakers include:

  • Professor Mike Raco (Bartlett School of Planning, UCL)
  • Lord Mendelsohn (Shadow Spokesperson, Business, Innovation and Skills)
  • Dr Niamh Moore-Cherry (School of Geography, University College Dublin)

Chair:

  • Heather Stewart (joint Political Editor, the Guardian)
