A seminar held on 20th May 1999. Professor John Bynner and Professor Heather Joshi of the Centre for Longitudinal Studies used evidence from the 1958 and 1970 birth cohort studies to identify some of the main childhood factors that tend to be associated with inequality or exclusion in adult life, and to gauge how the picture is changing over time. The evidence suggests that social class is as important as ever as an obstacle to achievement, that education is growing in significance, and that gender is declining in significance. The research also examines the effects of living in an urban or rural area.
